Portugal's Volta return points are under pressure as container returns rise
Retail and hospitality organisations report queues, full machines and collection delays at some return points, while the national deposit-refund scheme remains in operation.

Archived 12 September 2026Consumers should not lose a valid deposit because one machine is full or offline; they need to keep the container eligible and use the retailer's support or another return point.
- The Volta scheme remains active despite reported operational pressure at some of its roughly 3,000 retail return points.
- A full or faulty machine does not cancel the deposit attached to an eligible container.
- Containers must remain empty, recognisable and within the scheme's rules to be accepted.
- Retailers and the scheme operator need the location and time of a fault to investigate recurring collection problems.
What users are encountering
Trade associations say rapid adoption has placed pressure on reverse-vending machines, storage and collections. The practical result can be a full machine, a queue or a return point that temporarily cannot accept more containers.
That is an operational problem, not an announcement that the national system has ended. The scheme still applies to eligible drink containers carrying the required marking and deposit.
What to do when a return point is unavailable
Do not crush or discard the container if you intend to reclaim the deposit. Ask the retailer whether another machine or manual arrangement is available, or use another listed return point. Keep any voucher until it has been redeemed.
For a recurring fault, record the shop, machine location and approximate time and report it to the retailer or Volta. A photographed error screen can help, but avoid capturing other customers or personal information.
What you can do now.
- 01
Keep eligible containers empty and in a condition the scanner can recognise.
- 02
Ask for the nearest alternative when a machine is full or unavailable.
- 03
Report repeated faults with the location and time.
