IN BRIEF

The programme may create companionship and new homes for dogs, but adoption still requires a safe match, ongoing care and informed consent.

  • The pilot is planned to start in January on Terceira.
  • Pata D'Açúcar will implement the project.
  • The regional Agriculture department is supporting it with €21,000.
  • The announcement does not make every older resident or every dog automatically eligible.
01

What the pilot is trying to do

The project brings together two needs: dogs awaiting a suitable home and older people who may benefit from companionship. The partnership was presented in Angra do Heroísmo and is intended to begin with a supported pilot rather than open, unsupervised handovers.

The practical value will depend on assessment, animal temperament, the person's wishes and ability to provide care, the home environment and what happens if health or housing circumstances change.

02

Adoption is a long-term responsibility

Food, veterinary care, exercise, identification and daily attention continue after the programme begins. Families should discuss backup care without assuming that an older person wants or can manage an animal.

Interested residents should wait for Pata D'Açúcar to publish application and matching rules. A project designed to reduce loneliness should not create pressure to accept an unsuitable adoption.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

What you can do now.

  1. 01

Wait for the organiser's published eligibility and support details.

  2. 02

Discuss costs, daily care and a backup plan before applying.

  3. 03

Use the formal matching process rather than arranging an informal handover.
