The gap students are trying to close
Nearly 50,000 candidates received a place in the first phase of Portugal's higher-education admissions process. The rush that followed lifted observed average room rents to roughly €550 in Lisbon and €450 in Porto.
Those averages now sit above the monthly reference support quoted for eligible displaced grant students who cannot obtain public residence accommodation. Eligibility and the amount actually awarded still depend on the student's application and circumstances.
Search quickly without dropping the checks
Ask the university's social-action service about residence availability, the grant process and any recognised local housing routes. In the private market, insist on seeing the room or arranging a live viewing, verify the person offering it and read the full term, deposit and notice clauses.
A genuine landlord should be able to identify the property and explain the contract. Pressure to pay immediately, inconsistent names, copied photographs or refusal to provide a written agreement are reasons to stop and verify before sending money.
