Setúbal begins a large clean-up of illegally dumped waste in Manteigadas

A concentrated clean-up
Setúbal municipality and its municipal services have begun removing a large accumulation of illegally deposited waste in Manteigadas. The affected ground lies between the district archive and the roundabout leading to Avenida José Estrela Leão, close to Avenida Teixeira do Vale.
Crews are collecting sofas and other furniture, timber, green waste, rubble, insulation and construction material. Heavy containers, lorries and excavating machinery are being used, so the work is expected to continue for several days.
This is intended to be a wider campaign
The council describes Manteigadas as the start of a campaign for peripheral parts of the city where large illegal dumping sites have developed. It also says inspection and enforcement will be strengthened.
The removal operation deals with an existing site; it does not create permission to leave new material nearby. Adding waste after an area has been cleared simply restarts the same public cost and environmental problem.
Use the right collection route
Bulky household items, garden waste and construction debris do not necessarily use the same municipal service. Before moving anything, identify the material and check the current collection or licensed drop-off arrangement.
If you see illegal dumping, record the location safely and report it rather than confronting the person or touching unknown material. Avoid the work area while machinery is operating.
