Archived 12 September 2026Residents and day visitors can plan around the municipal holiday and join a programme that explains why Bocage remains central to Setúbal's identity.
- 15 September is Setúbal's municipal holiday and the 261st anniversary of the birth of poet Manuel Maria Barbosa du Bocage.
- The civic programme begins at 09:00 at Paços do Concelho and continues at Fórum Municipal Luísa Todi at 10:00.
- Casa Bocage is open for free visits from 14:00 to 18:00.
- The wider September programme continues with theatre, a historical parade, exhibitions and music.
What is happening today
Setúbal is celebrating the Day of Bocage and the City on Tuesday 15 September. The day opens at 09:00 with the flag ceremony at Paços do Concelho and flowers at the Bocage statue, accompanied by poetry. A formal session follows at 10:00 in Fórum Municipal Luísa Todi.
A city-centre discovery trail also starts at 09:00 from Rua João de Deus. Teams can contain up to five people. Because this is a municipal holiday, check the opening hours of any ordinary service you need rather than assuming a normal Tuesday timetable.
An afternoon built around the poet
Casa Bocage opens its doors for free visits from 14:00 to 18:00. Visitors can see its long-term exhibition and the temporary exhibition devoted to Bocage by Júlio Pomar. At 15:00, the literary prize bearing Bocage's name is presented at Paços do Concelho.
At 16:00, Casa Bocage hosts the first edition of O Meu Bocage, where local people share poems they value. The day's programme closes with a presentation of Álvaro Arranja's Antologia de Ensaios and a poetry recital with guitar accompaniment.
There is more after the holiday
The celebrations continue beyond 15 September. The remaining programme includes theatre at Fórum Municipal Luísa Todi on 17 September, a historical parade from the port to Praça de Bocage on 19 September, and music on 26 September.
For a simple visit today, choose one anchor—the civic ceremony, Casa Bocage or the literary programme—and leave time to walk the historic centre. The event is spread across several venues rather than contained in one festival site.
