What changes during August
The conservation measure is designed to reduce pressure on the Sado's resident bottlenose dolphins during the busiest boating month. Between 13:00 and 15:00, vessels must not approach the animals anywhere in the estuary.
In the core area between Setúbal, Tróia, the mouth of the Sado and the Figueirinha side, waiting for dolphins is restricted throughout August. The purpose is to create periods and places in which the group is not continually surrounded by observation traffic.
Choose a responsible trip
Ask the operator whether it is authorised for marine wildlife observation and how the August rule changes the advertised itinerary. A responsible operator cannot promise a sighting because the animals are wild and conditions vary.
Read cancellation and rebooking terms before payment. A trip that becomes a scenic estuary tour when dolphins are not found should be described that way in the booking terms.
What recreational boats should do
If dolphins appear unexpectedly, keep the vessel predictable and avoid cutting across their direction, surrounding the group or separating individuals. Do not turn an encounter into a pursuit.
The skipper remains responsible for navigation and compliance with harbour, protected-area and wildlife rules. Keep watch for ferries, commercial traffic, swimmers and changing conditions as well as the animals.
Watch from land when it works
A land viewpoint can remove vessel pressure, though sightings are never guaranteed. Stay within public paths and viewpoints and do not enter dunes, cliffs or restricted port areas for a better angle.
Binoculars are more useful than moving closer. The best wildlife experience is one that does not change the animal's route or behaviour.
