Archived 12 September 2026The figures are an industrial-output signal, not a measure of new-car sales or a forecast for one factory job. Businesses should separate production, registrations and exports when planning.
- September output was 32.7% below September 2025.
- Production in the first nine months was 10.1% lower year on year.
- The monthly fall affected passenger cars, light commercial vehicles and heavy vehicles.
Production is not the same as the market
ACAP's series counts vehicles made in Portugal. Registrations measure vehicles entering circulation and can rise while factory output falls because production and domestic sales cover different products and markets.
September's total included 19,114 passenger cars, 5,367 light commercial vehicles and 210 heavy vehicles. One month can also be affected by model changes, maintenance and factory schedules.
Use the trend with company-level evidence
A supplier should combine the national data with its own orders, customer forecasts and inventory. A worker should rely on formal employer communication rather than infer a redundancy or shift change from the national percentage.
The next releases will show whether September was a temporary interruption or part of a longer slowdown. Year-to-date output gives a more stable signal than the single month.
What you can do now.
- 01
Separate production data from registration and sales data.
- 02
Check formal customer or employer information before making a decision.
- 03
Compare the next ACAP release with the nine-month trend.
