Archived 12 September 2026Busy national figures do not describe every destination, but they help residents and businesses judge late-summer demand and pressure.
- Guests increased 1.9% to 3.9 million.
- Overnight stays increased 1.7% to 10.9 million.
- Total accommodation revenue reached about €1.1 billion.
- Average daily room rates rose 3.0%.
Revenue outpaced the rise in nights
INE estimates 3.9 million nights from residents and 7.0 million from visitors living abroad. Total and room revenue both increased 4.6%, while revenue per available room rose 1.5% and the average daily rate reached €163.20.
Markets moved differently: nights from Poland and Canada grew strongly, while the French market declined. National accommodation data do not include every form of stay or show whether one town was full.
Plan from destination-level evidence
Visitors should compare dates, transport and cancellation terms rather than assume all of Portugal follows the national average. Residents in busy areas can check municipal event and traffic notices before peak weekends.
Operators should compare occupancy, confirmed bookings and operating costs with the wider trend before expanding capacity. Revenue growth is not the same as profit growth.
What you can do now.
- 01
Check prices and capacity for the exact destination and dates.
- 02
Read cancellation and local-tax terms before booking.
- 03
Businesses should compare revenue with labour and supply costs.
