IN BRIEF

The national result is strong, but a local interruption, building pipework or private supply still needs a separate check.

  • ERSAR reports a 98.86% safe-water indicator for mainland public supplies.
  • The figure refers to regulated public-supply monitoring at the consumer's tap.
  • Local incidents and building plumbing can differ from the national result.
  • Private wells and boreholes are not covered by the same household assumption.
01

What the national percentage means

Water suppliers sample and test against regulated quality parameters, with ERSAR supervising the mainland sector. The indicator shows very high compliance across the monitored public network.

It does not mean every sample is identical or that no short local advisory can occur. Madeira and the Azores have their own regional arrangements, and a property's internal pipes or storage can affect water after it enters the building.

02

Check the supply you actually use

Use ERSAR's entity search to identify the local supplier and consult current notices after a burst main, prolonged absence or unusual colour, taste or odour. Follow a boil-water or non-consumption notice until the responsible authority lifts it.

A private well or borehole needs its own lawful use, protection and testing regime. Clear-looking water is not proof that microbiological or chemical parameters are safe.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

What you can do now.

  1. 01

Identify the local water supplier for the property.

  2. 02

Follow any current local advisory before using the water.

  3. 03

Arrange appropriate testing for a private supply.
