Twenty-two storm-damaged road and rail sections remain closed
Infraestruturas de Portugal says 20 road closures and two rail closures from the 2026 storms remain active and are shown on its live recovery map.

Archived 12 September 2026A familiar route in an affected district may still need a diversion months after the original weather event.
- IP reports 22 active closures: 20 road and two rail.
- It says 325 road cuts have already been restored.
- The live map gives location-level status and expected reopening where available.
- On-site signs and operator instructions take priority over an old route plan.
Why the national total is only a starting point
The closures are the remaining part of a much larger recovery programme following severe weather in January and February. IP says it has dealt with more than 4,100 incidents and restored 325 interrupted roads by September.
The number does not show whether your journey is affected. Open the exact map marker and then check the relevant rail operator or road authority before leaving.
Plan around works as well as closures
Seven larger recovery contracts are also beginning across Santarém, Leiria, Aveiro, Castelo Branco, Coimbra and Lisbon districts. Work can create alternating traffic or temporary lane closures even where the route is not one of the 22 fully closed sections.
Give time-critical journeys a buffer and do not enter a signed closed road because a navigation app proposes it. Reopening estimates can change after engineering inspections or further weather.
