IN BRIEF

The monthly fall does not mean Portugal is using less fuel over the year: the rolling 12-month total was still 2% higher.

  • Road-fuel consumption fell from 564,000 to 506,000 tonnes between July and August.
  • Diesel use fell 14.2%, while consumption of 95-octane petrol edged up.
  • Average diesel rose 6.4% month on month and 95-octane petrol rose 1.2%.
01

A monthly drop alongside higher prices

DGEG's August statistics show diesel consumption falling from 422,000 to 362,000 tonnes. Consumption of 95-octane petrol rose slightly, from 125,000 to 126,000 tonnes.

Average road-diesel prices increased from €1.907 to €2.029 per litre, while 95-octane petrol moved from €1.943 to €1.966. These are market averages, not the price at every filling station.

02

The longer trend moved differently

Across the 12 months ending in August, road-fuel consumption was 2% above the preceding comparable period. One quieter month cannot by itself establish a sustained fall in driving or household demand.

Use DGEG's live fuel-price portal when comparing stations. Check the product, update time, location and any membership condition before planning a journey around an advertised price.
