Archived 12 September 2026The figures give small businesses useful context, but they do not replace their own sales, stock and cash-flow records.
- The trade turnover index rose 1.7% year on year.
- Retail grew 2.4%, wholesale 1.5% and motor trade 0.8%.
- Employment increased 0.9%.
- Remuneration increased 5.8%.
Retail led the annual increase
The August index shows growth across retail, wholesale and motor trade, although at different speeds. Hours worked rose 1.4% and remuneration increased more quickly than employment.
This is an index of sector activity, not a profit measure. Inflation, staffing, rent, payment delays and the mix of goods can produce a very different result for an individual business.
Measure the business you actually run
Compare like-for-like sales, gross margin, unsold stock and cash collection with the same period last year. Separate confirmed orders from enquiries and identify products whose supplier cost has moved materially.
A new business should test local footfall and demand before committing to a long lease or large stock order. National growth does not guarantee demand at one address.
What you can do now.
- 01
Review sales, margin and stock together.
- 02
Check local demand before increasing fixed costs.
- 03
Keep confirmed orders separate from forecasts.
