More Portugal residents can now use airport e-gates
Portugal has widened access to automated passport control for foreign residents. Eligible travellers still need a valid biometric passport and Portuguese residence permit.

What changed at the border
Portugal's Public Security Police has expanded access to automated passport-control gates for foreign nationals who legally reside in Portugal. The useful change is operational: a larger group of third-country residents can use the lane marked for Portuguese residence permits instead of automatically joining the general manual queue.
The gate still performs identity and document checks. This is not a separate immigration status, a digital residence card or permission to travel without the documents that support the journey.
The document combination that matters
The traveller needs a valid biometric passport and a valid Portuguese residence permit associated with that passport. At the gate, scan the passport requested by the machine and follow the camera instructions. Keep glasses, hats and anything obscuring the face out of the way.
If a passport was renewed after the residence card was issued, if the chip cannot be read or if the system cannot match the record, allow time for manual control. Carry both the residence permit and the passport used for the journey in hand luggage.
Do not build a tight connection around the gate
Automated access can reduce waiting, but it cannot guarantee a processing time. Queues, document checks, technical problems and referrals still happen. A resident travelling with family members who are not independently eligible may also need to use a staffed route.
Read the signs at the airport and follow the officer's direction. At departure and arrival, a calm explanation plus the complete document set is more useful than arguing that an e-gate worked on a previous trip.
The pre-flight check
Confirm that the residence permit and passport will both remain valid for the trip, and check the entry rules for the other country as a separate question. A Portuguese residence permit supports residence in Portugal; it does not replace a passport or every visa requirement outside Portugal.
Keep a secure digital copy for recovery, but do not assume a phone image replaces the original. If a document is expired, lost or awaiting renewal, obtain case-specific travel guidance before going to the airport.
