Renewables provide 70.8% of mainland electricity production in September
APREN's September balance attributes 70.8% of mainland electricity production to renewable sources, led by wind, hydro and solar.

Archived 12 September 2026Production share and the share of national consumption supplied by renewables are different measures. Both can be accurate while giving different percentages.
- APREN reports wind at 21.7%, hydro at 21.5% and solar at 20.5% of mainland production in September.
- REN reports that renewables supplied 52% of national consumption during the month.
- REN also records imports supplying 35% of consumption, which changes the denominator used in the comparison.
The 70.8% figure describes domestic production
APREN's indicator asks what share of electricity produced on the mainland came from renewable sources. Wind, hydro and solar together account for most of the reported renewable production, with bioenergy making up the balance.
It does not say that renewables supplied 70.8% of everything consumed in Portugal. Imports, exports, network losses and the relationship between production and demand affect a consumption measure.
REN's consumption measure answers a different question
REN reports renewables meeting 52% of national consumption in September and imports meeting 35%. The remaining supply includes non-renewable domestic production.
Monthly results depend on weather, demand, reservoir conditions and cross-border flows. They should not be converted into a household bill forecast or a guarantee about the source of power at a particular socket.
What you can do now.
- 01
Check the denominator before comparing energy percentages.
- 02
Use REN data for system demand and supply flows.
- 03
Use the electricity contract and tariff for a household cost decision.
