Portugal will review the 52-day museum access scheme by June 2027
The Government has committed to review the resident-based free-entry scheme for state museums and monuments after concerns raised by the European Commission.

Archived 12 September 2026No replacement rule has been decided. The current 52 free days remain the practical reference until a formal legal change is published.
- The current scheme grants Portuguese citizens and residents 52 free days a year at 37 state-run mainland sites.
- The European Commission questioned the difference in treatment between residents and visitors from other EU countries.
- The Government says it will complete a review by the end of June 2027.
A review, not an immediate withdrawal
The commitment follows an EU infringement concern about nationality and residence-based access. It does not itself cancel the existing scheme or define whether future access will expand, narrow or use a different eligibility test.
The 52-day system is governed by current national rules and participating sites. Autonomous-region museums and other institutions can operate under different arrangements.
Check the rule at the time of the visit
Until a new legal act is published, visitors should follow the current official instructions and bring any evidence the participating site requires. A 2027 review deadline is not the date on which a new rule necessarily starts.
Once the review produces a decision, confirm the participating sites, eligible visitors, booking process and transition date before relying on free entry.
What you can do now.
- 01
Use the current official scheme for visits planned now.
- 02
Confirm eligibility and booking with the individual site.
- 03
Recheck the rules after the Government publishes the 2027 review.
