IN BRIEF

The national total does not show the status of one child. Families waiting for placement should obtain a written status from the school or regional education service.

  • The figure covers requests received in the previous week, not every unresolved case.
  • The minister said some children may not yet be in Portugal.
  • Placement depends on the child's circumstances, local capacity and the formal enrolment record.
01

A late-arrival pressure point

At a parliamentary hearing on 6 October, the Education Minister said 380 requests had arrived in the preceding week and that 73% related to foreign pupils. Late applications can follow family arrivals, address changes or incomplete records after classes have begun.

The minister said no pupil was being allowed to fail through the process, but that statement is an account of government handling—not confirmation that every child already has a timetable or place.

02

Keep the application traceable

Families should confirm that the request is formally registered and ask which school or DGEstE service is responsible. Keep the application reference, address evidence, identity documents and every written response.

Do not submit repeated conflicting applications merely to accelerate a reply. If a child is in Portugal and still without a place, request a written status and escalation route from the responsible education service.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

What you can do now.

  1. 01

Confirm that the enrolment request is formally registered.

  2. 02

Ask the school or DGEstE for the responsible service and written status.

  3. 03

Keep the application reference and all supporting documents together.
