Archived 12 September 2026Households should expect different effects across fuel, food and services rather than apply the headline rate to every bill.
- The preliminary annual inflation rate is 3.6%.
- Core inflation is estimated at 2.7%.
- Energy inflation rose to 15.4%, largely because of fuel.
- INE will publish the final September figure on 13 October.
The headline moved faster than underlying prices
INE estimates that consumer prices rose 1.2% during September and 3.6% over the year. The measure excluding energy and unprocessed food was lower at 2.7%, while the energy component reached 15.4%.
The release is a quick estimate and can be revised. It also describes the average basket: a household that drives frequently, rents, or buys different food will not experience exactly the same change.
Update the costs that actually affect you
Compare recent fuel receipts, utilities, groceries, rent and transport with your own budget. Businesses should review supplier quotes and margins before changing prices simply because the national rate increased.
For rent, pensions, benefits or contracts linked to a separate index, use the rule and reference period written into that scheme. September's quick estimate is not automatically the applicable adjustment rate.
