Archived 31 August 2026The record broadens Portugal's business story beyond tourism, but high-tech goods remain a relatively small part of total exports.
- High-technology goods exports totalled €4.08 billion in 2025, up 3.8%.
- Telecommunications equipment exceeded €2.3 billion and represented more than half the total.
- Aerospace exports grew 49.1% to about €160 million.
- Pharmaceuticals, computing equipment and chemicals also grew, but the national base remains concentrated.
What reached a record
Portugal exported €4.08 billion in goods classified as high technology during 2025, a new nominal high and a 3.8% increase. These categories generally involve higher research intensity and technical sophistication than traditional manufactured goods.
The total gives Portugal a stronger technology-export narrative, but it should not be confused with all software, services or startup activity. This statistic is about traded goods.
Telecoms carry much of the result
Telecommunications equipment accounted for more than €2.3 billion and grew about 11%, meaning one category supplied over half of high-tech goods exports. Aerospace was smaller at roughly €160 million but recorded the fastest highlighted increase, 49.1%.
Pharmaceutical exports rose 14.5%, computers and office equipment 12%, and chemical products 6.4%. The mix matters because a record built on several categories is different from one driven by a single shipment.
What it means for work
Growth can support engineering, manufacturing, logistics, compliance, research and specialist services around export clusters. It does not mean every technology role is available in every Portuguese city or that salaries track northern European markets.
Jobseekers should map employers, language requirements, location and contract type. Remote work for a foreign employer raises a separate Portuguese tax, labour and Social Security analysis.
What founders should test
Portugal's ports, airports, EU market access and technical talent can support export businesses, but the practical setup still depends on permits, certification, customs, energy, suppliers and financing.
Start with customers and the operating chain. A national export record is encouraging context; it is not market validation for a new company.
What you can do now.
- 01
Identify the Portuguese cluster relevant to your skill or product.
- 02
Separate goods-export data from software and services.
- 03
Compare salaries, languages and contract requirements by employer.
- 04
Validate customers and compliance before choosing a base.
