IPMA has placed districts from Viana do Castelo to Setúbal under a yellow warning for persistently high maximum temperatures.

Archived 12 September 2026People working outdoors, travelling or caring for an older person or young child should plan around the hottest part of the day and keep checking the live district warning.
- The warning covers Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Leiria, Santarém, Lisbon and Setúbal.
- It is scheduled to remain in force until 19:00 on Monday, subject to later IPMA updates.
- A yellow warning signals weather-related risk; it is not a prediction that every place will reach the same temperature.
- Hydration, shade and avoiding strenuous exposure between 11:00 and 17:00 are the practical priorities.
Where the warning applies
IPMA has extended a yellow high-temperature warning across nine mainland districts. Coimbra, Leiria and Lisbon entered the warning first, with Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Santarém and Setúbal following on Sunday morning.
The stated reason is the persistence of high maximum temperatures. Conditions can still differ sharply between a coastal neighbourhood, an inland valley and higher ground, so the district warning should be paired with the forecast for the exact place.
Change the day, not only the clothing
Drink water regularly, move demanding outdoor work or exercise away from the middle of the day and keep rooms as cool as practical. Check on older people, babies, people with chronic illness and anyone living alone, because they may not recognise or communicate heat stress early.
Seek clinical advice through SNS 24 if heat-related symptoms cause concern, and call 112 for an emergency. Recheck IPMA before a long journey or event because the warning period can be shortened, extended or raised.
What you can do now.
- 01
Check the current warning for the exact district.
- 02
Move strenuous activity out of the hottest hours.
- 03
Check on people who may be more vulnerable to heat.
- 04
Use 112 for a medical emergency.
