Fuel stations must display the ISP-and-VAT reduction from 17 October
Decree-Law 199/2026 requires fuel retailers to show, beside or on each pump, the current per-litre tax reduction under the wording “Redução ISP+IVA”.
Archived after its publication day. Search retains this original briefing for background and accountability.
Archived 12 September 2026The notice explains part of the tax treatment; it is not a guaranteed saving against another station's price. Drivers should still compare the final pump price.
- The display duty starts on 17 October 2026.
- It must show the difference between the reference and current ISP rates, including VAT, for each fuel sold.
- False, incorrect or outdated information can attract fines of €1,000 to €3,000.
A new information duty at the pump
Until now, the detailed tax reduction had to appear on invoices. The new rule moves the information to a visible position beside or on the dispensing equipment, so customers can see the current ISP-and-VAT reduction before or while refuelling.
The displayed amount is a tax comparison. It does not fix the retail price, which can still vary by station, brand, location and commercial discount.
Compare like with like
Check the exact fuel grade and final price per litre rather than treating the tax notice as a discount from the price shown at another station. Keep the receipt if the display and charged price appear inconsistent.
The October government update put the overall tax reduction at 28.3 cents per litre for diesel and 26.2 cents for petrol from 4 October; those figures can change when the official rates are updated.
