Archived 12 September 2026The report is a useful picture of Portugal's resident foreign population, but it does not change a visa, residence-permit or renewal rule.
- The AIMA administrative total was 1,585,854 at the end of 2025.
- AIMA says 84.6% were of working age.
- More than 500,000 residence titles were granted or renewed during 2025.
- The report is statistical evidence, not proof of an individual's current status.
What the new total means
AIMA's Migration and Asylum Report 2025 records 1,585,854 foreign citizens in its administrative population at year-end, about 38,000 more than in 2024. It reports 337,880 residence-title grants and 189,331 renewals during the year.
Administrative counts answer a different question from a census or a population estimate. They should not be combined casually with other datasets, and the nationality totals do not explain an individual person's route or rights.
What it does not change
The publication does not create a new appointment channel, extend a permit or alter the documents required for a pending process. Use the current AIMA instructions for the exact service you need.
For organisations, the age profile and geographic distribution can inform language, housing and public-service planning. For an individual case, the permit type, dates and official record remain decisive.
What you can do now.
- 01
Use the report for national context, not case status.
- 02
Check your own permit or application through the correct AIMA route.
- 03
Keep a dated copy of documents and official communications for an active case.
