Portugal's European Week of Sport starts with activities across the country
From 23 to 30 September, municipalities and regional bodies are offering local sessions for children, families, older residents and people trying a new activity.

Archived 12 September 2026The useful opportunity is local: the Azores list 207 events, Arganil 29, and national partners publish separate town-by-town programmes.
- The campaign runs from 23 to 30 September.
- The Azores programme spans all nine islands and includes a health-and-wellbeing focus.
- Arganil's programme uses 32 partners across 12 parishes.
- Free entry at one session does not establish the rules for every event.
A national week made of local programmes
The campaign is coordinated around the #BeActive theme, but delivery is local. The Azores announce 207 events; Arganil lists 29 activities; INATEL publishes sessions in cities including Lisbon, Estremoz, Braga, Santarém, Setúbal, Bragança, Vila Real and Viseu.
That variety is useful, but it means there is no single booking link or universal age rule. Some activities are open drop-ins and others are organised for schools, workers or registered groups.
Find the right level
Read the description for fitness level, equipment, insurance, access and weather plans. If you are returning after illness or a long break, choose a gentle introductory session and seek clinical advice where appropriate.
The week can also be a way to meet a local club before paying a membership. Ask what continues after 30 September and what a regular session would cost.
What you can do now.
- 01
Search the municipal or regional programme where you live.
- 02
Confirm registration, equipment and suitability for the chosen session.
- 03
Ask whether the activity continues after the campaign week.
