Archived 12 September 2026The figures show a growing employment base alongside a productivity challenge; neither number predicts the prospects of one applicant, profession or region.
- Employment in Portugal increased by 1.0% from the first to the second quarter of 2026.
- That was the highest quarterly increase reported among EU countries in the Eurostat release.
- Compared with the second quarter of 2025, employment in Portugal was 2.2% higher.
- Labour productivity measured per hour worked was 0.5% lower than a year earlier.
Two numbers that describe different things
Employment growth counts the change in people working in resident production units. Productivity compares real economic output with the people or hours used to produce it. A country can therefore add workers while output per hour moves in the opposite direction.
Eurostat's quarterly estimates are a broad economic measure. They do not show which occupations are recruiting, whether a vacancy is suitable for an English speaker or what salary and contract a particular employer will offer.
Use the release as context, not a job-search shortcut
Someone considering a move should still research the demand, language expectations, professional recognition and pay range for the exact occupation. Compare the likely net income with housing and transport costs in the place where the work is based.
An employer should separate headcount growth from output, training and investment decisions. The productivity result is a national signal, not a judgment on an individual worker or business.
What you can do now.
- 01
Check current vacancies and salary ranges for the exact occupation and location.
- 02
Confirm whether qualifications or professional registration must be recognised in Portugal.
- 03
Build a net-income budget around the proposed contract rather than the national growth rate.
