IN BRIEF

Passengers should continue using the ticket and validation method accepted by the operator they are travelling with today.

  • Eight entities signed the contactless-payment protocol.
  • The first phase is intended to support direct bank-card validation.
  • The agreement covers major rail, metro, ferry and metropolitan bodies.
  • No universal launch date or common fare has been announced.
01

A shared direction, not a finished ticket system

The protocol brings together CP, the Lisbon and Porto metros, Metro Mondego, Transtejo/Soflusa, Mobi.E and the Lisbon and Porto metropolitan transport authorities. The first phase is meant to establish a common platform for contactless validators.

Implementation, participating services, fare calculation and any daily caps still need operational detail. A bank card that works at one gate is not proof that it works on the next operator.

02

Use the method shown for the journey

Until each operator announces deployment, buy and validate the ticket or pass it currently accepts. Visitors should not board on the assumption that every bus, train, metro or ferry can charge a contactless card.

When the system launches, use the same card or device for entry and exit where required, and check bank records for duplicate or incomplete journeys.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

What you can do now.

  1. 01

Check the operator's current payment options before travel.

  2. 02

Keep using the required ticket or pass until launch is confirmed.

  3. 03

Review fare and card rules when each service activates contactless payment.
