Portugal's August inflation estimate rose to 3.3%, largely because of fuel

INE's flash estimate puts annual consumer-price inflation at 3.3% in August, up from 3.0% in July. The statistics office says the acceleration was almost entirely explained by fuel prices.

IN BRIEF

Households and businesses can separate a national price signal from the actual change in their own rent, grocery, energy and transport costs.

  • The August consumer-price estimate is 3.3% year on year, 0.3 percentage points above July.
  • INE says fuel prices explain almost all of the acceleration.
  • Prices are estimated to have risen 0.1% between July and August.
  • The flash estimate is a national average and may be revised in the final release.
01

What the 3.3% figure means

The annual rate compares the overall consumer-price index in August 2026 with August 2025. It does not mean that every bill rose by 3.3%, or that a household should add the same percentage to every category in its budget.

Fuel had an unusually large effect on the change from July's rate. A household that drives frequently may feel that pressure differently from one that relies mainly on a fixed public-transport pass.

02

Use the release as a budget check

Compare the last three months of actual spending by category before changing a first-year Portugal budget. Keep rent, mortgage, food, utilities, fuel, public transport and insurance separate so that one volatile item does not distort the whole plan.

INE will publish the final August consumer-price result after the flash estimate. Contract indexation, benefit updates and private price changes follow their own legal or contractual rules and should not be inferred from this headline alone.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

What you can do now.

  1. 01

Compare actual fuel and transport spending with the previous three months.

  2. 02

Keep fixed and variable household costs separate in your budget.

  3. 03

Use the final INE release or the relevant contract rule for any indexed decision.
