IN BRIEF

The figures describe network demand, not the crowding or punctuality of a particular flight. Travellers still need the live airport and airline information for their journey.

  • Portuguese airports handled 7.9 million passengers in August, 2.0% more than a year earlier.
  • The January-to-August total reached 51.01 million, up 2.4% year on year.
  • Lisbon accounted for 47.7% of passengers in the first eight months, followed by Porto and Faro.
01

Growth continued at a slower monthly pace

The official statistical release counts passengers through the national airport network. Lisbon handled 24.3 million passengers from January through August, Porto 12.1 million and Faro 7.6 million.

A passenger total is not a measure of service quality, capacity at a specific hour or the number of unique travellers. It can include the same person on separate legs.

02

Use operational data for an actual trip

Higher network demand can matter for queues and ground transport, but the aggregate figure cannot predict conditions on one date. Check the departure airport, airline and border-control guidance for the correct terminal and arrival time.

Allow a realistic connection margin and use the airline's booking record for disruption decisions. Do not infer that a route, seat or schedule exists from national growth data.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

What you can do now.

  1. 01

Check the airline and airport for the live journey status.

  2. 02

Allow time for check-in, security and border formalities.

  3. 03

Use INE releases when comparing long-term airport demand.
