What the first year tells us

Portugal's national suicide-prevention line handled about 25,600 calls in the year after it opened. Around four in five calls were answered, with an average waiting time of roughly 50 seconds. More than 40% of callers were aged between 18 and 29, and women accounted for about 60% of calls.

The service identified nearly 700 situations involving an imminent risk of suicide. Those cases matter more than the headline total: the line is designed to connect a person in distress with a trained mental-health professional at the moment help is needed.

02

Which number to use

Call 1411 for suicide-prevention and psychological support. The call is free and is answered by psychologists and mental-health nurses trained for this work. A relative or friend who is worried about someone can also seek guidance.

If someone is in immediate danger, has already harmed themselves or cannot be kept safe, call 112. Stay with the person if it is safe to do so, remove immediate hazards where possible and follow the emergency operator's instructions.
