Two projects have received government approval, including a 10-kilometre link from ISMAI to Trofa and a metrobus extension serving Gondomar.

Archived 12 September 2026The decision creates a funded development path, but these are future links with works expected to run into 2031, not services passengers can use now.
- The Trofa project is planned with nine stations over about 10 kilometres.
- The Gondomar project extends rapid public transport east of Porto.
- Construction is expected to begin from 2027 and continue to 2031.
- Approved investment is not a current timetable or guaranteed opening date.
What has been approved
The Trofa extension is designed to continue from ISMAI in Maia to a new interface in Trofa, with nine stations and an estimated €184 million investment. A separate project extends the network toward Gondomar using a metrobus solution.
Government approval allows procurement and delivery to advance. Route, station and construction details can still evolve through design, tendering and works.
Do not price a home as if the line is open
Future transport can influence a location, but the useful household test remains today's route. Check the current bus, rail, driving and walking options before signing a lease or purchase.
If the future line matters to the decision, identify the exact proposed station and project phase. Allow for construction disruption and delays rather than treating 2031 as a contractual promise.
What you can do now.
- 01
Use current transport for today's affordability and commute test.
- 02
Check the exact proposed alignment, not only the municipality name.
- 03
Track procurement and construction milestones before relying on an opening date.
