IN BRIEF

The free period is useful for trying an everyday route, but it does not change the published stops or turn the service into a whole-island transport pass.

  • Ponta Delgada's municipal Minibus service is free from 16 to 22 September 2026.
  • The measure is part of European Mobility Week and is intended to encourage public-transport use.
  • The fare waiver applies to the Minibus service, not automatically to every bus on São Miguel.
  • Check the current route and timetable before using it for an appointment or airport connection.
01

What is free this week

Ponta Delgada City Council has made its Minibus service free for seven days, from Wednesday 16 September through Tuesday 22 September. Passengers do not need to pay the normal Minibus fare during that period.

This is a time-limited municipal measure. It should not be read as free travel across all of São Miguel or as a permanent change to the island's public-transport system.

02

Use the week to test a real journey

A free ride is most useful when it answers a practical question: whether the route gets close enough to work, a health appointment, a school, the market or the centre at the time you actually need it.

Check the direction, stop and return service before boarding. A route that works for a daytime outbound journey may have a different frequency later, and a local Minibus should not be assumed to cover the airport or a distant parish.

03

The fare returns after Mobility Week

The published free period ends on 22 September. If the route works for you, check the ordinary fare or pass that will apply afterwards rather than treating this week's zero price as the permanent cost.

Service notices can also change stops temporarily. Recheck the municipal or operator information before a time-critical journey, particularly where roadworks or a city event affects the centre.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

What you can do now.

  1. 01

Choose one ordinary journey to test before 22 September.

  2. 02

Confirm the stop, direction and return time before leaving.

  3. 03

Check the normal fare if you plan to keep using the route.

  4. 04

Keep another option for a time-critical connection.
