Repair contract moves Penela's closed ex-IC3 section into the works stage
Infraestruturas de Portugal has awarded a €2.75 million contract for the storm-damaged section between kilometres 13.5 and 14.3.
Archived after its publication day. Search retains this original briefing for background and accountability.
Archived 12 September 2026The award is progress for a road closed since February, but the 240-day contract period is not a guaranteed reopening date.
- The contract value is €2,749,950.
- The contractor is Teixeira Duarte.
- The execution period is 240 days.
- Drivers must continue using the signed alternatives until the road authority reopens the section.
Why the repair is substantial
Storm-saturated ground caused deep geotechnical movement, cracking and vertical displacement between kilometres 13+500 and 14+300. Infraestruturas de Portugal closed the road because the platform and foundations could no longer guarantee safe traffic.
The contract covers reconstruction rather than a surface patch. Its publication follows design and procurement stages, but mobilisation, ground conditions and site progress still affect the eventual opening.
Keep using the diversion
Infraestruturas de Portugal has identified the A13-1, A13, EN342 and EN110 as alternatives. The best route depends on the origin, vehicle and destination, so check live restrictions before setting out.
Do not enter the closed section because work appears inactive or a barrier has moved. Only an official reopening notice changes the traffic position.
What you can do now.
- 01
Keep the current diversion in regular journey planning.
- 02
Allow for works traffic near the affected section.
- 03
Wait for an official reopening notice rather than calculating 240 days yourself.
