The future plan for Praia do Pedrógão is open for public comment

Why the proposals changed
The Portuguese Environment Agency has reopened participation on interventions at Praia do Pedrógão in Leiria and at Cortegaça and São Pedro de Maceda in Ovar. Earlier proposals were consulted in 2025, but later decisions and severe coastal weather required revisions.
At Pedrógão, the earlier proposal would have removed part of the area used for arte xávega, the traditional shore-based fishing method. The new version keeps that area after the broader coastal-programme decision was reversed.
Erosion changed the Maceda plan
Storms and coastal overtopping early in 2026 caused a marked retreat of the shoreline at São Pedro de Maceda. The revised plan moves a simple beach support facility away from the erosion scarp and reduces the parking area, with landscape recovery for the affected ground.
At Cortegaça, the plan now also marks space for facilities supporting arte xávega. These are planning proposals, not an immediate instruction that every beach layout changes today.
How to make a useful submission
The consultation runs until 2 October. Interested people can submit observations through Participa or send them in writing to the Environment Agency.
A useful response identifies the exact beach and part of the proposal, explains the practical effect and, where possible, suggests evidence or an alternative. Separate concerns about access, parking, fishing activity, erosion and environmental protection rather than sending one broad objection.
