IN BRIEF

Residents, visitors and employers have time to adjust travel, outdoor work, exercise and care arrangements before the hottest period.

  • Yellow heat warnings are listed for Beja, Bragança, Castelo Branco, Évora, Guarda, Lisbon, Portalegre, Santarém, Setúbal and Vila Real.
  • The warning window shown by IPMA is 10:00 to 19:00 local time on Thursday, 3 September.
  • Some places may warm by 10°C to 12°C across Wednesday and Thursday, with 40°C to 42°C possible in the hottest inland areas.
  • Warnings and local forecasts can be revised, so check the town and time before making the final decision.
01

Where the warning applies

The current yellow warnings cover ten mainland districts rather than the whole country. Coastal conditions can differ sharply from the interior, and a district-level warning does not mean every town will record the same maximum.

IPMA expects a short, marked rise in temperature through Wednesday and Thursday. The south coast of the Algarve is expected to see a smaller rise than many inland and western areas.

02

Plan around the hottest hours

Move strenuous activity away from the afternoon, carry water and do not leave a child, dependent adult or animal in a parked vehicle. Check on anyone who lives alone or cannot easily cool their home.

An employer or event organiser should assess the actual exposure, shade, water, work intensity and emergency plan. If illness develops, use SNS 24 for health guidance and call 112 for a medical emergency.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

What you can do now.

  1. 01

Check the current IPMA warning and town forecast before travelling or working outdoors.

  2. 02

Reschedule strenuous outdoor activity away from the hottest part of the day.

  3. 03

Make a specific plan for older people, young children, animals and heat-sensitive medication.
