Who the additional places are meant to help
The announced capacity increase is intended to open university accommodation to a wider group than scholarship holders alone. That includes students arriving from mainland Portugal or abroad and people studying in Madeira through a mobility programme.
The University of Madeira already describes its residence accommodation as serving students, international students, mobility students and researchers. The application itself remains a separate decision made through the university’s social-action service.
Do not cancel a fallback too early
A capacity announcement is not the same as a confirmed room. Ask which residence, room type, opening date, price, deposit and contract period apply to the offer you receive.
Keep a private-market fallback until the university confirms the place in writing. If considering a room from a private landlord, verify the identity, address, contract and payment terms before transferring money.
