Madeira begins operating a unified regional warning system
A new legal framework connects risk monitoring, operational alerts and public warnings for storms, fires, landslides and other serious events across Madeira and Porto Santo.

What the new framework joins together
Madeira's system creates one regional structure for monitoring risk, escalating readiness among civil-protection actors and warning the public when a serious accident or disaster is imminent or occurring.
The law reflects island risks including heavy rain, storms, rural fire and slope failure. The technical rules are to be approved through the regional civil-protection system as implementation progresses.
Monitoring, alert and warning are not the same
Monitoring is the expert observation of hazards. An operational alert changes readiness among services and responders. A public warning tells people about expected or occurring danger and the protective action relevant to them.
An evacuation or road closure is more specific. Follow the newest instruction from the competent authority for the exact municipality and location.
Prepare to receive the message
Keep the phone charged, enable ordinary emergency notifications and follow the Regional Civil Protection Service and municipality through their official channels. Visitors should know the accommodation address and municipality, not only a hotel or trail name.
Do not rely on one social network account. Mobile service and electricity can fail, so keep a battery pack, radio or another household backup suited to the property.
A warning needs a household response
Know the safest interior area, the route away from flood or fire exposure and who needs assistance. Keep essential medicine, water, footwear, identification and a light together without blocking the exit.
Call 112 for an emergency requiring immediate help. Do not call it merely to ask whether a general forecast has changed; use the official information channels for that.
