What happened on Thursday
A rockfall obstructed the Via Expresso between São Vicente and Porto Moniz on Thursday afternoon. A team from Madeira's road authority inspected the slope and the route reopened later that evening after the immediate safety assessment.
The reopening restores the direct north-coast connection, but it is a current operational decision rather than a permanent all-clear for the escarpment.
Further inspection starts on Monday
The Regional Civil Engineering Laboratory is due to begin a new assessment of the slope near the VR2 on Monday 24 August. The first stage is expected to identify geological weaknesses and areas more susceptible to further movement.
A later three-dimensional model is intended to study possible rock trajectories and support decisions on stabilisation or protection. The first stage is scheduled to finish by 28 August, with the second planned for the end of September.
Check again on the day
Drivers should confirm the route before setting out, particularly during inspection work or after heavy rain. A road shown as open the previous evening can still be subject to short-notice traffic control or a new closure.
Keep the regional road and Civil Protection channels available, and allow time for an alternative route. Follow barriers and traffic officers rather than a saved navigation route if conditions change.

Ask accommodation providers about access to the exact property, not only the municipality. Local roads can be affected differently from the main expressway, especially where steep slopes and narrow access routes are involved.
