IN BRIEF

Imported cases do not by themselves prove community transmission, but measles is highly contagious. People should check vaccination records and telephone a health service before attending in person with compatible symptoms.

  • DGS said the three confirmed cases had no known link to one another.
  • The patients were unvaccinated and none was in hospital when the update was reported.
  • Vaccination and prompt telephone contact with health services are the main practical safeguards.
01

The investigation concerns separate imported cases

DGS information reported on 14 October identifies recent travel as the common risk factor, not contact between the patients. Public-health teams trace contacts and assess exposure; absence of a known link is not a guarantee that no further case will appear.

Fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a spreading rash can have other causes. A diagnosis requires clinical and public-health assessment.

02

Call before attending in person

If measles is possible, telephone SNS 24 or the relevant health unit and describe symptoms and travel or exposure. Advance notice lets staff reduce contact with babies, pregnant people and others who may be vulnerable.

Check the individual vaccination record rather than assuming protection. A clinician or the public-health service can advise on missed doses, recent exposure and special circumstances; call 112 for a medical emergency.
