IN BRIEF

The disruption is school-specific. Families need written instructions from their own school rather than assuming that the same arrangement applies across Lisbon.

  • More than 300 pupils have reportedly been affected across the schools covered by RTP's report.
  • Some schools have asked parents for proof of work when deciding whether a child can remain.
  • National shortage figures provide context, but the practical instruction comes from each school.
01

A staffing problem is reaching family routines

RTP documented Lisbon schools sending pupils home because there were not enough teachers or staff to maintain the normal arrangement. The report says some schools asked parents to show proof that they were working before accepting children.

Earlier official figures cited by RTP recorded 2,029 unfilled teaching hours nationally, with 56% in Lisbon and Setúbal. Those dated totals explain the pressure but do not identify the current position in every school.

02

Ask for the rule that applies to your child

Parents should request the school's current written instruction, including dates, year groups, attendance expectations and any evidence being requested. A message from another school or an informal parent group is not enough to establish the local rule.

If the arrangement is unclear or creates a safeguarding problem, use the school leadership and responsible education service. Keep copies of notices and responses, especially where attendance or proof of work is in question.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

What you can do now.

  1. 01

Check the school's official message before the next school day.

  2. 02

Ask for dates and affected year groups in writing.

  3. 03

Keep any requested evidence and the school's response.
