Lisbon's GIRA has a new app—and day passes no longer hold €300
Lisbon's shared-bike service has replaced its app, carried existing accounts across and removed the €300 security hold that made a day pass awkward for occasional riders.
Archived after its publication day. Search retains this original briefing for background and accountability.
Archived 12 September 2026Regular users should confirm that their pass and balance appear after signing in. Visitors can use the day pass without the former €300 card hold, but still need the official app and an available bike station.
- Existing users can sign in to the new app with their current credentials.
- Active passes and account balances should transfer automatically.
- The day pass no longer requires a €300 security deposit.
- MB WAY is available in the new app; Apple Pay and Google Pay are planned rather than current payment options.
What changes for an existing user
GIRA launched its replacement app on 15 September. Existing users do not need to create a new account: the same login should open the migrated profile, including an active pass and wallet balance.
Check those details before starting a journey, especially if you rely on an annual pass. The GIRA and ePark wallets are now separate, and the former points system has ended. Existing points remain frozen rather than converting into a new benefit.
The useful change for a visitor
The day pass no longer places a €300 security hold on the user's card. That removes a major barrier for an occasional rider who wants a short period of access without tying up a large amount of available credit.
The pass still gives access to a shared system, not a reserved bicycle. Check the live station map before relying on GIRA for a timed appointment, and leave an alternative for the final part of the journey if the nearest station is full or empty.
Before the first ride
Download the official GIRA app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, sign in and confirm the displayed pass, balance and payment method. MB WAY has been added. Apple Pay and Google Pay were announced for a later stage, so they should not yet be treated as available.
Use the in-app map to choose a station and inspect the bicycle before releasing it. If the migrated account is incomplete, resolve it before depending on the service for an essential journey.
