Leiria is preparing a pharmacy network for future emergencies

Why the pilot is being built
The January storm exposed how quickly pharmacy access can be disrupted when a premises is damaged or power and communications fail. Leiria and the Order of Pharmacists are now developing a structured network that can be incorporated into municipal civil-protection planning.
The first group is expected to include seven to ten pharmacies chosen for geographic coverage and resilience. A technical group and emergency exercises are also part of the reported design.
What the network may provide
Reference pharmacies could use generators or alternative connectivity to keep essential medicine services functioning and coordinate with other pharmacies and health structures. The value is continuity and shared information during a defined emergency.
It is not a substitute for ambulance services, hospital emergency care or a guarantee that every medicine will be in stock. Activation rules will matter as much as the equipment.
What is not live yet
The protocol is expected in October, and a final public list of participating sites and activation instructions was not available in the reviewed material. Residents should continue to use ordinary pharmacy-duty information and current civil-protection instructions.
Do not travel to a pharmacy during a storm because it was mentioned in an early plan. Wait for the municipality or protection authorities to identify the operating route.
Build household resilience now
Keep an up-to-date medication list, prescription information and the contact for the usual pharmacy. Reorder repeat medicine with a reasonable margin instead of waiting for the last dose, while avoiding unnecessary stockpiling.
Medicines with refrigeration or specialist handling need a clinician or pharmacist-approved contingency. Do not improvise storage temperatures during an outage.
