IN BRIEF

The award recognises the business presentation; it is not independent proof that the device detects every seizure or replaces clinical care. Patients should discuss monitoring needs with their healthcare team.

  • The home device is designed around movement associated with tonic-clonic and focal-to-bilateral tonic-clonic seizures.
  • The company says it sends alerts to a carer without a wearable camera-based setup.
  • Its own public limitations say the product does not diagnose epilepsy or replace medical care.
01

A pitch win and a medical claim are different evidence

The San Francisco result is a commercial milestone for the Portuguese startup. It does not by itself validate sensitivity, false-alarm rates, suitability for an individual or the product's current availability in every market.

The project has links to the epilepsy-monitoring team at ULS Santa Maria and has received innovation support. Clinical and regulatory evidence should still be checked for the precise device version and intended use.

02

Families still need an individual safety plan

No monitoring device can guarantee detection of every event. Medication, emergency instructions, night-time supervision and seizure first aid should be agreed with the treating team.

Before purchasing or relying on a device, ask what seizures it is designed to identify, how alerts work during power or internet loss, who receives the data and what support exists after an alarm.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

What you can do now.

  1. 01

Discuss seizure monitoring with the treating clinical team.

  2. 02

Read the current intended-use and limitation information.

  3. 03

Check privacy, connectivity and alert arrangements before relying on a device.
