Six-month IC17 airport viaduct works bring temporary lane restrictions
A €2 million rehabilitation of the IC17 airport viaduct began on 12 October and is expected to take 180 days, with partial lane closures and some night or off-peak work.

Archived 12 September 2026The viaduct remains part of a busy Lisbon airport approach. Drivers should allow extra time and follow temporary signs rather than rely on an old lane layout.
- The project covers joints, supports, drainage, waterproofing, surfacing and safety barriers.
- Temporary restrictions will suppress some lanes and divert traffic across those that remain open.
- Some work will take place at night or outside peak periods.
The work is a rehabilitation, not a new road
Infraestruturas de Portugal says inspections identified defects requiring intervention across several parts of the structure. The 180-day period is the contract programme and can contain different traffic phases.
The project began on 12 October. It does not mean the same lane will remain closed throughout the whole period, so drivers need the current signs on each journey.
Protect time-sensitive airport journeys
A partial lane closure can create queues beyond the immediate work area, especially when an incident or peak traffic reduces the remaining capacity. Navigation estimates should be treated as live guidance, not a guaranteed arrival time.
For a flight, collection or appointment, check traffic before departure, leave a margin and keep attention on temporary speed limits and merges. Do not stop in a live lane to change route settings.
What you can do now.
- 01
Check live traffic before using the IC17.
- 02
Allow a larger buffer for an airport journey.
- 03
Follow temporary lane signs and speed limits.
