Archived 12 September 2026The procurement is intended to improve conditions for people held there, staff and visiting families, but it does not yet establish a contractor, site-start date or completion date.
- The announced tender value is €1 million and the stated works period is 12 months.
- The facility forms part of the Angra do Heroísmo prison establishment.
- The municipality says the procedure is being carried out with the justice infrastructure institute IGFEJ.
The location has a regional role
The Horta facility allows people from four islands to be held closer to family than a mainland placement. Rehabilitation can therefore affect both conditions inside and the practical burden of visits.
That purpose does not confirm which areas will close, whether transfers will occur or how visits will operate during work. Those details require an operational notice from the prison authority.
Tender comes before construction
Bids must be assessed and a contract concluded before the 12-month works period can begin. The tender value is not proof of the final contract price.
Families and lawyers should continue using current official contacts until DGRSP or the establishment publishes any temporary access or visiting change.
What you can do now.
- 01
Do not infer a visiting change from the tender alone.
- 02
Check DGRSP or the establishment before a planned visit.
- 03
Follow the award and contract before treating works as started.
