The Glória funicular investigation will continue into 2027
Portugal’s transport-accident investigators now expect the final report on the Lisbon funicular accident by the end of March 2027. Six interim safety recommendations have already been accepted by Carris and IMT.

Why the timetable changed
The investigation into the Elevador da Glória accident is taking longer than the previously expected September timetable because of the complexity of the technical examinations. Investigators now expect the final report by the end of March 2027.
A longer investigation does not mean that safety work waits until publication. Interim recommendations are used when a practical control can be strengthened before every technical and organisational question is settled.
What has happened already
The investigating authority issued four recommendations to Lisbon operator Carris and two to the Institute for Mobility and Transport. Lusa reported that all six were accepted.
Acceptance should be followed through implementation and oversight. The final report will provide the fuller evidence, analysis and conclusions; it should not be replaced by speculation based on individual fragments released earlier.
What passengers should do
Use the service information published for the day of travel and respect any closure or replacement arrangement. Do not assume an old route description or map proves that the funicular is operating normally.
For step-free access, luggage or a fixed appointment, identify a practical alternative before setting out. Lisbon’s hills can turn a short distance on a map into a difficult replacement journey.
