Archived 12 September 2026The decision advances the project, but it does not mean that beds are open or that patients can request admission now.
- The planned unit has 20 beds.
- The reported investment is about €4.9 million.
- The state budget is expected to fund 80% of the project.
- Opening, staffing and referral arrangements have not yet been announced.
What has moved forward
ESTAMO has authorised use of the former Casa da Mãe property for the health project. The municipality financed and prepared the design, while the future service is intended for the public health network in Baixo Mondego.
Property approval is one delivery stage. Procurement, construction, equipment, staffing, licensing and an operating date still need to follow before the unit can receive patients.
Palliative care is accessed through clinical referral
Palliative care supports people with serious illness and their families according to clinical need. A new local building can improve capacity, but it does not create self-referral or guarantee a place for one patient.
Families needing support now should speak to the treating team or current health service. Do not postpone a present care discussion while waiting for a future facility.
What you can do now.
- 01
Use current clinical teams for an immediate care need.
- 02
Follow ULS Baixo Mondego for construction and opening information.
- 03
Wait for confirmed referral rules before treating the unit as available.
