Archived 12 September 2026Drivers should expect many people walking on narrow verges, while pilgrims need visibility, safe group practice and secure handling of valuables.
- The GNR operation runs from 10 to 13 October.
- The Sanctuary lists the anniversary pilgrimage on 12 October and the Basilica dedication on 13 October.
- Pedestrian groups should walk single file on the verge facing traffic and use reflective clothing.
Extra attention on approach roads
Thousands of pilgrims may walk on roads with heavy traffic and little or no verge. The GNR advises groups to mark their front and rear, avoid headphones and phones while walking, and gather only away from the carriageway.
Drivers should reduce speed, expect groups after dark and follow temporary police directions. An apparently clear road can change quickly near a walking group.
Arrive early and protect belongings
The GNR advises visitors to allow time, keep documents with them and place valuables out of sight before parking. Phones and wallets are safer in a closed front pocket or bag kept against the body.
Keep children and older companions within sight and agree a meeting point. Use the Sanctuary's current programme for ceremony times because schedules and access arrangements can change.
