IN BRIEF

The deaths occurred during an outbreak in one institution; officials have not attributed every death to laboratory-confirmed influenza A.

  • The outbreak was identified at a care home in Veiros, Estremoz, on 23 September.
  • Ten residents have attended Évora hospital; five died there, four were discharged and one remains admitted.
  • Health and inspection authorities are continuing epidemiological and organizational reviews.
01

The latest total needs a careful reading

ULS Alentejo Central reported that the latest patient arrived at Évora hospital with influenza A and was already receiving end-of-life care. Five of the seven deaths occurred in hospital and two at the home.

The health authority has previously stressed that laboratory confirmation was not available for every person who died. The total therefore describes deaths among residents during the outbreak, not seven individually proven deaths caused by influenza A.

02

The response remains active

Public-health teams are monitoring infection-control, hygiene, isolation and protective-equipment measures at the home. Health inspectors and prosecutors have also opened inquiries into the response.

Relatives should use the institution or health authority's direct contact for an individual's condition. General reporting cannot establish the medical position of a particular resident.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

What you can do now.

  1. 01

Use the care home or health unit for information about an individual resident.

  2. 02

Follow public-health guidance for visits and respiratory symptoms.

  3. 03

Treat future official updates as replacing earlier totals.
