Starting university in Coimbra? Handle enrolment, housing and transport separately
First-phase placements bring a new group of students to Coimbra this week. The safest arrival plan treats the university login, the room contract and the local travel pass as three different jobs.

Archived 31 August 2026Doing the steps in the right order reduces the chance of paying for the wrong room, travelling to the wrong campus or buying a pass before the required residence evidence is ready.
- Use the institution’s own enrolment message and student portal for the academic step.
- Confirm the exact teaching address before choosing a room.
- Never transfer a housing deposit without identifying the owner, property and written terms.
- Coimbra’s metropolitan pass conditions depend on the route and, for some products, proof of residence.
First, secure the university place
Students placed through the national first phase enrol with their institution from 24 to 27 August. At the University of Coimbra, first-time access uses the student number and the DGES access key, after which the university portal provides the formal steps.
Save the placement result and every enrolment confirmation. Check the faculty, campus and teaching address before making a housing decision; the word Coimbra can describe a wider set of daily journeys than a first-time visitor expects.
Then test the room, contract and journey
A room advert is only a lead. Ask for the full address, monthly total, deposit, contract length, utilities and the identity of the person receiving money. View it in person or use a trusted representative, and be wary of pressure to pay before documents can be checked.
Map the door-to-door journey to the actual teaching building at the time classes begin. A cheaper room can cost more in time and transport if it sits on the wrong side of the city for the course.
Buy transport for the real route
Coimbra’s metropolitan system covers 19 municipalities and offers several products. The €35 CBR_PM monthly product is tied to residence in Coimbra municipality and requires a residence declaration that must be renewed periodically.
Students using an intermunicipal route or Metrobus connection may need a different combination. Take the address and route to an official service point before buying, rather than choosing a pass from its name alone.
