Archived 12 September 2026Passengers can now transfer between mainline trains, Metrobus and urban buses more directly. Drivers and regular bus users should also check the revised city-centre routes before travelling.
- Metrobus services to Coimbra-B and Praça da República have been operating since 10 September.
- The expanded operation raises the published daily service from 291 to 452 journeys.
- Peak Metrobus frequency is advertised at five minutes, while SMTUC routes 4, 7 and 103 have been reinforced by about 30%.
- Rua da Sofia now has restricted access for general traffic in one direction, so drivers should check the current city route rather than follow an old journey plan.
What the new links change
The Metrobus network now serves Coimbra-B, the city's main railway station, and Praça da República. The two links began carrying passengers on 10 September and were formally inaugurated on 15 September.
For someone arriving by mainline train, Coimbra-B is now part of the Metrobus network rather than a separate transfer problem. Praça da República adds a direct stop close to the university, central neighbourhoods and several established bus connections.
There are more services, not only two more stops
Coimbra City Council says the revised operation increases the total from 291 to 452 daily journeys. Metrobus vehicles are scheduled as frequently as every five minutes at peak times, and SMTUC routes 4, 7 and 103 have received an increase of about 30%.
Those are network figures, not a promise that every branch runs every five minutes. Check the destination shown on the vehicle and the timetable for the exact stop, particularly when connecting to a train or travelling late in the day.
How the ticket connection works
The MOVE-C pass can be used on Metrobus and SMTUC services. A CP rail ticket remains a separate product unless the journey and ticket conditions explicitly include the local connection.
If you are making an important transfer, allow time to walk between platforms and stops and to identify the correct Metrobus destination. The opening of a link does not remove the usual risk of a missed connection when services are delayed.
Drivers face a changed city centre
The Metrobus extension arrived with traffic changes in central Coimbra. Rua da Sofia is restricted to public transport and authorised vehicles in the direction from Praça 8 de Maio towards Avenida Fernão de Magalhães, with specific access arrangements for loading and other permitted traffic.
Navigation apps and familiar shortcuts may take time to reflect a new restriction. Follow the signs on the street, leave additional time and check where a passenger can be dropped off without entering a restricted lane.
What you can do now.
- 01
Check the destination and departure time for the exact Metrobus stop you need.
- 02
Allow a connection margin when transferring at Coimbra-B.
- 03
Use MOVE-C for integrated Metrobus and SMTUC travel where it fits your journey.
- 04
Review the current city-centre traffic route before driving through Baixa.
