The decision has been taken
Coimbra's municipal executive approved a reorganisation of circulation in the Baixa and changes to the SMTUC network. The city says the work is necessary to fit Metrobus into Avenida Central and Praça da República while protecting safe movement through a constrained centre.
Five opposition councillors voted against the proposal. The disagreement shows that the plan has consequences for different users, but the vote itself does not tell a driver which street changes first.
The operational map is what matters
A council approval can precede signs, bus-stop relocations and enforcement. Residents should wait for the municipality and SMTUC to publish the implementation date, affected streets and revised routes before relying on a new journey plan.
Businesses need particular clarity on loading times and access. A general statement about reducing through traffic is not enough to schedule a delivery to a specific address.
Prepare without guessing
If your route crosses Avenida Central, Praça da República or the lower city, identify one practical alternative now and allow more time when the change begins. Bus users should check both the route number and boarding stop.
Do not treat an older navigation-app instruction as proof that a turn remains legal. Temporary signs and the final municipal circulation plan take priority when the new arrangement starts.
