IN BRIEF

Drivers between north-west São Miguel and Ponta Delgada have a new route, but should allow time to learn its junctions and follow temporary signs during the opening period.

  • The bypass opened to vehicles on Monday, 31 August.
  • The project represents more than €45 million of investment and was funded mainly through the PRR.
  • It is intended to improve the link between the north-west of São Miguel, Capelas and Ponta Delgada.
  • A new road can change traffic patterns; navigation apps and habitual routes may take time to catch up.
01

What the new road connects

The route is designed to create a more direct connection between the north and south sides of São Miguel and to reduce pressure on older local roads. It includes the main 8.3-kilometre bypass and an additional link into the town of Capelas.

The project also includes drainage and other measures intended to reduce exposure to flooding in affected parts of Ponta Delgada municipality. That does not remove the need to follow closures or civil-protection instructions during severe weather.

02

Give the opening period some margin

Check road signs at each junction instead of following an older map automatically. A navigation service may route traffic differently while its data is being updated, and local traffic may take time to settle into a new pattern.

For an airport, ferry, school or medical appointment, leave extra time on the first journeys. Report a road defect or damaged sign through the responsible regional channel rather than assuming another driver has done so.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

What you can do now.

  1. 01

Use the signed route and allow extra time on the first journey.

  2. 02

Update offline maps before relying on them in an unfamiliar part of the island.

  3. 03

Continue to follow weather closures and local civil-protection instructions.
